In “On Photography” Susan Sontag writes that “inorganic societies” derived their “Faustian energy” through “printed words” and that the photograph goes a step further in this direction.
The concept of inorganic society reminds me of social software and its inorganic qualities. However, I feel that people using this software are at an interesting crossroads. It appears that the inorganic societies found in social software are approaching similar traits and qualities of that found in daily social life.
One key example I’m looking for is the telling of stories. While this is still written prose and and not a physical communication or expression its really close in my mind.
